There was a notice on the door of the Student Center on Wednesday. The scary part is that this particular college sits in an area that when I first moved to Northern California was very nearly devoid of violent crime. Then the county finished the Light Rail System and modified the bus lines to feed people from the Light Rail through these unincorporated areas of Sacramento. My question is, if incidents like this happen on campus, then how come the Campus Police have the time to perform any kind of maintenance on the ticket machines or to walk through the parking lots multiple times per day to ensure that those who are parking have valid permits? How come these officers are not performing their duties using the tried and true methods, like those of a beat cop? How come they do not spend the majority of their day just walking around the campus and showing a presence? Back in January there was an incident where a young lady was having issues where she was being harassed by someone who was calling and texting her with nasty, threatening messages. When she told the Campus Police officer his initial response was that there was nothing he could do about it, I looked him in the eye when I said to the girl “Make sure he makes a report. He has to make a report. If he does not know how to make a report, ensure that he asks someone and they show him how. In this way, should something happen, the report will exist with the messages and the number documented.” My question is, if he could not do anything about this is the only thing that these “Police” are good for is writing tickets and harassing the kids on Campus?
Kind of scary.
